THE 10 “HOTTEST STARTUPS” IN BERLIN

Here are the results of last weeks poll from @techberlin, looking for the hottest startup in town. The poll to date received more than 3.800 votes!

Here the result:

1.  Smeet (658 votes)

2.  6Wunderkinder (326 votes)

3.  Twago (281 votes)

4.  Soundcloud (270 votes)

5.  Ezeep (169 votes)

6.  Tape.TV (138 votes)

7.  Wooga (120 votes)

8.  ResearchGate (120 votes)

9.  Gidsy (109 votes)

10. Orderbird (94 votes)

Almost 100 companies were added to the poll, which gives a nice overview of the startup scene in Berlin. You can find all startups and votes here. Some of the companies i had actually never heard of before.

Since many companies asked their followers on Facebook and Twitter to vote for them it should be noted that the more established, bigger companies had an advantage over the early stage companies. So “hottest” may actually translate into “most community outreach” or “most social media savvy” here. We will therefore make another poll soon, where only companies younger than 6 months (from date of launch) are asked to participate. This way we shall find the hottest early stage company!

Update: Twago passed Soundcloud in the amount of votes just minutes after this post was published and the list was therefore updated. Since Facebook does not allow the poll to be closed without deleting it, the poll may change over time. We will therefore check the list every couple of weeks and write an update if the ranking changes considerably (i.e. new players entering the Top 10 list, etc.).

How about a coffee break in East London?

This blog post was inspired by THE CUBE members “We Make Websites” – the web designers admit that they love coffee and therefore figured out the best coffee places in the London East End. It goes out to all the coffee lovers, tea drinkers and café dwellers of London.  Here is a shortlist of their favorite cafés around East London, in no particular order. We thought it could be of any use for you…

Just so you know… neither “We Make Websites” nor “Phoenix Ventures” has any affiliation with any of the below mentioned establishments, except that we thought that they are good enough to be shared among friends and followers.

 Towpath Café

Regent’s Canal towpath, between Whitmore Bridge and  Kingsland Road Bridge, N1 5SB

The Towpath café is East London’s canal side treat. Situated  between Angel and Dalston it is the perfect weekday stop off or  weekend destination. Serving great coffee and a variety of  homemade cakes the towpath café really is a pleasure to visit.  There is no wifi connection, however, it makes a great place to  take a break from the barrage of Emails, Tweets and Facebook  refreshes! Also check out their new garden area built on the far side of Whitmore bridge.

Open 8am-dusk (Tue-Fri) / 9am-dusk (Sat) / 10am-dusk (Sun)

Nude Espresso

6 Hanbury Street E1 6QR

In the heart of Spitalfields
Nude Espresso offers great food and great coffee. The variety of coffee and the care taken by the baristas makes it well worth a visit. Head down at lunch to escape your desk and try one of their freshly made sandwiches, YUM!

Open 7.30am-6pm (Mon-Fri)

Counter Café

7 Roach Road E3 2PA

This one is for all the lovely people in Hackney Wick - don’t worry, we know you get forgotten about. All non-Wickers, your missing out!
Counter Café is a true eastern delight; unfussy interior, super coffee and some great bites. If you’re a tea lover then aim to order a treat from the food menu - tea is not a specialty here but a great place to sit and chat, eat and read!

Open 7:30am-5pm (Mon-Wed,Fri) / 7:30pm-11pm (Thu) / 8:30am-5pm (Sat) /  9:30am-5pm (Sun)

Tina, We Salute You

47 King Henry’s Walk, London N1 4NH

Now I have it on good authority that
Tina, We Salute You is the perfect place to meet for a lovely pot of tea on the way to work. Pop along on your bike and ease yourself into the day by sampling some of the lovely teas and breakfast treats! Not exactly east, but I thought I would throw you a nice alternative to coffee.

Open 8am–7pm (Tue - Sat) / 10am–7pm (Sun)

Career Days @ HWR Berlin - Marc Rosenfeld meets Students and Young Entrepreneurs.

Our director Marc Rosenfeld will be guest at a panel discussion among other entrepreneurs and professionals as well as students from Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin) today.

The panel will be discussing one of the most important questions students have to answer while finishing their study program:

What comes after the diploma? How do I manage to find a job and even more important, how to find the job, that suits best to me?

Marc Rosenfeld knows what he is talking about. A couple of years ago, he also asked himself these questions, when finishing his business management program at HWR Berlin, although his particular situation was slightly different, as he has managed his career entry years before and studied part-time in evening classes. Nevertheless the he had to find answers to the mentioned questions, as one faces new opportunities after finishing a study program. Today he can look back on almost 15 years of marketing and sales expertise within a number of organizations and several industries, he was engaged in.

Today Marc Rosenfeld will provide some hints to successfully manage the career entry. Together with expert from other industries, all graduates of HWR Berlin, he will discuss the best strategies to understand job-adverts, apply for a job and how to pick the right opportunity. As a convinced entrepreneur, he will also bring out the pros and cons of starting a own enterprise.

If you are interested in either attending the event or contacting Marc Rosenfeld with your questions and opinions regarding this topic, please feel free to do so.

Startups Hit the Town in Shoreditch… New Ways to Meet People.

We mentioned before that the Silicon Roundabout is meant to be the hottest spot for Startups, not only in the UK but also in Europe. The upcoming of such a hotspot usually goes together with the occurrence of a specific culture. The Young & the Wild work hard but also know how to enjoy their spare-time. Shoreditch isn’t just a worksplace – it’s a themepark of urban hipness.

Every Friday night for example, the young entrepreneurs hit the town and invented the so called “Silicon Drinkabout”, which you can also follow on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/SiliconDrinkabout. If you work hard, you need to relax the same way… that is the mentality everyone follows around the Silicon Roundabout. Over time the event grew bigger and bigger and now attracts not only startups. For sure – there is no better way to getting to know the right players in the market. If one doesn’t fancy East London pubs and bars, the Silicon Kickabout might be an alternative, if you are interested in table football.

Want to dive into this lively scene? Have a chat with someone at the TechHub and ask for their Buddy system.

If you want to find out about recent events or would like to meet some of the hippest people around, the most promising startups, VCs or even enjoy a drink with Phoenix Ventures, feel free to contact us.

“The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve’s success than the fact that much on the world learned of his passing on a device he invented.” (B. Obama)
Entrepreneurs all over the world got inspired by Steve and owe him a lot. So do we and express our condolences to his family and friends, his partners and co-workers and all those who got touched by him or his products.
On this day of mourning we recommend the Wired USA homepage, filled with quotes of gratefulness by popular entrepreneurs, VIPs and Wired readers.

Confidence – that is what makes successful entrepreneurs, right? The tech startups around the Silicon Roundabout seem to be… How do you Europeans like this Shirt?
You can get yours at Spreadshirt.net if you have the balls to show those Palo Alto geeks who’s coming… Clearly, there is absolutely no reason for European startups to hide behind the corner. Especially in trendy East London, one of the hottest entrepreneurial spots worldwide, loads of success stories have already been written. Find below a map of the area called Silicon Roundabout and the office locations of startups you definitely have heard of…

If this atmosphere does not push Phoenix Ventures success, we have no idea what else could! We are glad to be part of this scene.

In the middle of the Silicon Roundabout…

Besides Berlin, London is said to be the most interesting hot spot for European entrepreneurs. Three years ago the startup scene has settled in the East of London, an area called Shoreditch become very popular among tech startups. Where rents are low and thousands of hipsters are around, sub-cultures do emerge. So did the startup scene at a place now called “Silicon Roundabout”, hosting approximately  200 cool startups, such as Last.fm, Moo.com or the online gaming company Mind Candy (www.moshimonsters.com).

Shoreditch is about to become the East London Tech City, at least if all works out for UK Prime Minister David Cameron, who is willing to invest 400 mio. GBP in the area. Companies like Google, Intel and Cisco have already decided to invest into the Tech City already and are challenging the Silicon Valley as still being No.1 for entrepreneurship.

Phoenix-Ventures is happy to becoming part of this lively community. Located in The Cube London, a cosy co-working office just minutes away from the Silicon Roundabout, we are right at the pulse beat of innovation.

If you would like to get to know more about the Silicon Roundabout and what’s the life of an entrepreneur is about around here, we recommend reading the current Business Punk

The Cube London will be hosting Phoenix Ventures. We are happy to becoming part of this very lively co-working facility in the London East-End. Particularly this part of the town offers a number of advantages for startups and entrepreneurs.

Yes, the East-End has not been on top of the list of places in London where one would look for an appartment or office. But times are changing even cities. As the East-End reminds us of certain places in Berlin, where a startup culture has developed within the last couple of years, this is certainly the right place for us to start developing the company and our subsidiaries, also because the financial district is only a stone’s throw away.
We are looking forward to meeting investors and entrepreneurs in our office.
